handmade soy candles UK: why small batch matters
handmade is on a lot of candle labels. it's one of those words that's easy to print and hard to check.
so here's what it actually means at blissli, from the first sniff of a new fragrance to the moment the box is sealed. it's slower than it needs to be. that's the point.
it starts with the scent
choosing a new fragrance isn't something i do alone. it needs more than one reaction, more than one person pausing mid-sentence and saying: that one. it's my favourite part of the whole process and it never gets less interesting.
then the making
every candle starts with a clean jar and a wick in position. the soy wax gets melted, cooled to a specific temperature and mixed carefully. only then does the fragrance oil go in. then it cools again before it's poured, because the pouring temperature matters too.
the complicated bit is that none of this is the same twice. every fragrance oil has a different strength, so the amount changes. every combination of wax, oil and wick behaves differently. the temperatures that work for one scent won't work for another.
it demands patience. it rewards obsession.
what small batch actually changes
every scent gets its own settings
in a big factory run, one process suits thousands of candles. in a small batch, each scent gets the temperatures, quantities and wick it actually needs. that's the difference between a candle that smells great in the shop and one that still smells great at home.
problems get caught
when you pour a few dozen candles, you see every one. a jar with a flaw gets spotted before it leaves, not after.
the details get done
every blissli candle is trimmed, labelled and boxed by hand. gold-foiled labels, biodegradable packaging all the way through. every order gets a handwritten note from me.
it's fresher
small batches mean stock doesn't sit around for months. what you get was made recently.
why soy
blissli candles use soy wax. it melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, so it burns slowly and evenly, giving you around 40 hours from a 220g candle. the fragrance oils are free from phthalates and parabens. everything is vegan and cruelty-free.
wax melts follow the same principle: wax, oil, temperature, timing. there's just no wick to think about. they're poured into reusable moulds, set, popped out and packed into glassine bags. same care, different form.
how to spot a genuinely handmade candle
- small variations. handmade candles aren't machine-identical. a tiny difference in the surface is normal.
- a real person behind it. you should be able to find out who makes them and where.
- clear ingredients. a maker who cares about the process will tell you what's in it.
- limited runs. scents selling out and coming back is a good sign, not a bad one.

handmade soy candles: questions
are handmade candles better?
not automatically. but small batch makers can tune every scent properly, which usually means a better burn and a truer scent.
where are blissli candles made?
hand-poured in small batches in leatherhead, surrey.
how long does a handmade soy candle last?
a 220g blissli candle gives around 40 hours of burn, which works out at under 60p an hour.
all of that care exists for one moment: when you light it and feel it. i think about that moment every single time.
