how to use wax melt snap bars: a proper guide

if you've never used a wax melt snap bar before, the name doesn't exactly explain itself. it just arrives: a flat block of scented wax divided into sections. now what?

here's everything you need to know.

what is a snap bar, exactly?

a snap bar is a single piece of wax (usually around 50g) that's scored into sections, typically five. each section is a one-use portion of fragrance. you snap off what you need, pop it into a wax melt burner and let the heat do the rest.

they're sometimes called wax melt bars or breakaway bars. same thing.

what you need

just two things:

a wax melt burner. this sits a small ceramic or glass dish above a tea light. the tea light warms the dish, which melts the wax, which releases the scent. electric warmers do the same job without the tea light, useful if you'd rather not have a naked flame.

a tea light (if you're using a traditional burner). unscented works best. you don't want two fragrances competing.

that's genuinely it.

how many sections should you use?

one section is usually enough for a small room. two for a larger living room or if you want the scent to hit harder.

with blissli snap bars, each piece lasts around 2–3 hours before the scent starts to fade. a full snap bar has 5 pieces, giving you up to 15 hours of fragrance per bar. the wax itself doesn't burn away. it just stops throwing fragrance. that's your cue to change it.

how to change the wax

this is where most people get stuck. don't try to pour hot liquid wax. it goes everywhere.

the easiest method: let the wax cool and re-solidify, then press down on one edge of the disc with your thumb. it'll pop out cleanly. wipe the dish with a piece of kitchen roll and you're ready for the next section.

some people put the whole burner dish in the freezer for five minutes first. the wax contracts slightly and lifts straight out.

how long does a snap bar last?

one 50g bar gives you up to 15 hours of fragrance across five sections. burn one section an evening and the bar lasts five nights. use two sections at once when you want the scent to hit harder.

it's one of the reasons wax melts work out better value than you'd expect.

how to get the most from your bar

keep unused sections in a cool, dark place. a drawer or a small tin works well. wax absorbs other smells over time, so you don't want it sitting next to your coffee or an open reed diffuser.

rotate scents if you want variety. the disc pops out clean, so there's nothing stopping you switching from uplifting citrus in the morning to soft haze in the evening.

one more thing

the intensity of the throw depends on your burner as much as the wax. shallower dishes and electric warmers often give a stronger scent. if you're finding the fragrance too subtle, try a warmer with a wider, shallower dish.

if it's too strong (which rarely happens, but it does), use half a section or open a window.

blissli snap bars come in all twelve scents, including seasonal options. the scent selection box is a good way to try a few before committing to a full bar.
