when the clocks go back: an evening ritual for darker nights
this sunday, 25th october, the clocks go back. you get an extra hour in bed. then on monday it's dark by five and nobody asked for that.
you can't change the sky. you can change what happens in the room once it gets dark. here's a simple evening ritual that makes the early dark feel like something to look forward to.
why the first dark week feels so hard
it isn't really the cold. it's the switch. one week you're walking home in daylight, the next you're turning the big light on at half four and wondering where the afternoon went.
the fix is to give the evening a shape. a few small, repeatable things that tell you the day is done and the good bit has started.
the darker evenings ritual
1. close the curtains early
don't wait until it's pitch black outside. curtains drawn at dusk make a room feel smaller and warmer straight away. it's the cheapest cosy upgrade there is.
2. switch off the big light
overhead lighting is for finding your keys. lamps are for evenings. two or three low lights at different heights will do more for a room than any number of new cushions.
3. light one candle, the same one every night
repetition is the point. light the same candle at the same time and within a week your brain starts linking that scent with switching off.
for darker evenings i'd pick cosy glow (cashmeran, amber, cedarwood). it's warm without being sweet, the kind of scent that makes a room feel settled. if you want something softer, soft haze (jasmine, amber, vanilla) is the wind-down one.
4. put your phone in another room for twenty minutes
not all night. just twenty minutes. read, cook, sit, talk to someone. the candle's burning anyway, so you might as well be in the room to enjoy it.
5. something warm in a mug
tea, hot chocolate, whatever you like. it's part of the signal.
one candle, five weeks of evenings
every blissli candle is 220g with around 40 hours of burn. an hour or so a night gets you comfortably into december, at under 60p an evening.
if you'd rather switch scents more often, wax melt snap bars give you around 3 hours per section. one section covers a whole evening.
the safety bit
trim the wick before you light it. keep the candle away from curtains and anything that can catch. snuff it out before you go to bed. our candle care guide has the rest.
